Fresh off his tour with Bishop Briggs and the release of his second EP, Matt Maeson took the Songkick stage with tracks from “The Hearse” and “Who Killed Matt Maeson.” Matt blew the doors off the place with his booming ballads and punchy choruses, making his mark as an artist to watch.

We got the evening started by bringing in Matt’s top trackers on Songkick and filling them with Matt’s favorite foods and beverages from Brooklyn Gin. Matt kicked off the set with his new single “Hallucinogenics.” As we rocked along to “Put It On Me” and his first single “Cringe,” you could hear the influence of prolific performers like Johnny Cash and Kurt Cobain in his voice and lyrics. After an powerful acoustic performance of “Unconditional,” Matt sat down for a Q&A with the fans.

The Q&A kicked off with a conversation about Matt’s musical influences, starting with the Christian rock he was raised on to Jeff Buckley and Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra. He told us about how he looked up to Johnny Cash when he went on prison tours with his parents “‘cause he kinda did the same thing.” Matt recognized the light that his parents brought to the prisons and he wants to bring that feeling to everyone who listens to his music.

My parents always drove into me to make sure what you’re doing is for other people because that’s where you really find purpose… once you find something that you’re meant to do, use that to help other people.

When asked about his songwriting process, Matt told us about the difficult times in his life that influenced his songs “Cringe” and “Me and My Friends Are Lonely.” He also gave us a hint on where the next album is going and how his songwriting process starts. We also learned about why Matt gets nervous around professional skateboarders, his first time meeting King Krule, and his future tour plans.

Every project that I put out is basically just the last two years of my life. Me writing songs about different experiences and the way I’ve grown mentally, different situations I’ve gone through, and… perspectives of what if I handled this the wrong way? What would happen then? What would Matt say if he did make the wrong decision?
