Together, fans new and old bring Braid to London after 13 years
Back in January we started a conversation with our friends over at Punktastic about the kind of bands they’d love to see, the kind of bands that the Punktastic community would be up for pledging for to bring to London. Like every good pub music conversation we ended up talking about those influential bands that everyone knows about, but few got to see.
Bands such as The Murder Of Rosa Luxemburg or, Quicksand or Braid. Given that most of them had not played London in ten years, OR EVER, we thought it might be a bit a stretch. But to hell with it, stretches are why we work at a startup in the first place.
Now breathe in, because IT’S ON. BRAID ARE COMING TO LONDON FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 13 YEARS.
Braid started out in the mid 90’s when record shops were still a thing, Altavista was the best way of searching the internet, and file sharing was something you did with drawers. Since then we’ve come full-circle; their Midwestern emo/indie sound massively influenced the music of the late 90’s and early 00’s, they split up in 1999, and since then a whole new generation of fans discovered their music through the internet, but never got a chance to see them live.
Braid is just one example of this huge trend. Distribution via the internet is helping bands of all shapes, sizes, and ages to reach fans they never could before, at unprecedented scale. However, many of these fans – from punks in Beijing to indie-kids in Jakarta – never get to experience the real thing, the immeasurable experience, of seeing their favourite band live. Detour is about dragging live into the internet age; bringing the bands to fans – to you – not just the mp3s.
We’re stoked that Braid fans, both new and old, have come together on Detour to make this show happen. To bring such an influential, genre-defining band to London is a huge achievement, and we’re stoked that the fans were able to make it happen. Punktastic’s editor Tom Aylot told us;
“When we saw some of the great things that Songkick Detour were trying to do in London, we couldn’t resist trying to get involved. We thought Braid were a fantastic fit (being as it’s been so long since they’ve played on these shores), and we’re absolutely stoked that our readers have been the catalyst to making this special show happen with their pledges.
For the Braid show, this is mission accomplished for us and we couldn’t be happier, but now our readers can see that this can work with their support, we think and hope it’ll be the first of many!”
It goes without saying that it wouldn’t have happened without everyone involved supporting the value and vision of Detour; particularly Braid’s team. But the true heroes and heroines are you – the fans – who are willing to step up and support their favourite bands by saying ‘yes, if the band comes, I’ll be there’.
Braid will be performing ‘Frame And Canvas’ in full for its 15th year anniversary at The Garage, London on Saturday 27th July (tickets & details on Songkick)
Imagine where the internet would be if we were still using Altavista. Now imagine where live music would be if it were still using 90′s technology. No need, because you are. It’s stuck in the past, and we’re doing our best to fix it.
