Social Studies and Flaming Dr. Peppers: SXSW 2013
Being that I’m the Artist Ambassador here at Songkick, I packed up my earplugs, sunscreen, and business cards to head to SXSW a few weeks ago (from which I’ve only just now recovered). Having just got off a monthlong tour in Europe with my band Loch Lomond, heading straight to Texas was the ultimate cultureshock after driving 9,000 miles around 8 countries in Europe and playing quiet folk music.
The week started out pretty mellow as Interactive gave way to Music Week, and I kicked it off by speaking on a panel about constructive disruption in the music industry.
I had decided early on that I wasn’t going to set my heart on seeing any particular bands, but rather let myself find new bands randomly. I immediately found two new favorites: Social Studies from San Francisco (fantastic album and even better live performance), and MS MR.
As the week progressed, the lines got longer, the bass louder, and the rumors of secret shows more fevered (Justin Timberlake-this, Prince-that).
To keep my sanity, I even managed to get out of town to a beautiful riverfront view.
Also in the name of sanity, I drank something called a Flaming Dr. Pepper.
Here are a few bands I saw at SXSW that I think you might enjoy. Which band from the 2013 lineup would you have waited in line to see?
